Rescuing Love

Philip Chan looked around the desolate area known as the Zone in Russia. Two weeks ago, he was still in Canada going to college for a police preparation program. Still fresh in his mind, he remembered phone call he received from the Grinkov family. Angelique, their daughter was a former victim of the meltdown of Chernobyl. She was sent to Canada, like others to be treated for radiation. He in love with the beautiful young girl in the hospital while working as a volunteer. They stayed together almost every second they had while she was there until she left the hospital and went back to Russia, but kept a long distance relationship by email, letter and phone. As soon as she got back to Russian, she began studying at a local university to become a scientist to find out about the Zone around the Chernobyl. A few days earlier she phoned him of a great opportunity. Scientists from the Zone asked her to join their group to solve the mystery and stop it from happening again. The rumors of horrible things that had shown up on newspapers and websites have him apprehensive about her going, but he told she should go. Later, the Grinkov family called that fateful day, she and a small group of scientist entered the Zone close to their compound with escorts to study some mutation, but never came back. Nobody went to investigate, he asked for inquires but nobody gave answers. Philip decided to go himself. His parents begged him not to go. His friends didn’t want him to go, but he had to go. So his parents and friends gave him some money for a plane ticket and supplies.

Now he was here, some four clicks within the Zone. Philip bought the necessary equipment with the few Canadian and American dollars he had left, from the local scientists, even the dealers near the Zone, but for a hefty price.

A row of three decrepit two-storey houses stood on the far side of the road, windows rusting around their frames. Doors off their hinges or none at all. Grass have risen over a broken main road leading north-south direction. Interspersed pines and other species of trees grow here and there. From the information one veteran stalker in a tavern told him about a group of scientists he had meet while traveling and marked the area on his map. Philip wore an old NBC suit, gas mask and kevlar armor over it along with detectors. Strapped to his left hip was a well used Makarov pistol and knife. Cradled in his arms was a AKSU-47 SMG with a silencer and scope. Even with the protection, the dangerous journey nearly took three days to travel to the area sneaking past blind dogs during the day, wolf rats and mutants at night. He even killed some new mutation of predatory bird that looked like a ostrich that was edible. Finally he reached the area and began scouting, he came upon five bodies. There were signs of struggle and gun fire. He carefully checked the area and the bodies before burying them. He sighed in relief none of them were of Angelique and one set of foot print lead further somewhere into the Zone. Philip knew that she was alive hiding from the hostile environment. With that, he set out again to search for her, he will not stop or rest until he has found and save her.......
